Although the first vinyl flooring appeared in 1933, but it wasn’t until a few years after the second world war when industrial vinyl production picked up that it really became a major competitor against the other types of resilient flooring used at the time, such as linoleum.
Despite its success, it was the 1960s that saw further advances in vinyl flooring technology. This was when the first cushioned vinyl floors appeared, becoming a popular choice amongst consumers for their resilience, ease of maintenance, and low cost. Also, for the first time, vinyl flooring could be manufactured to resemble more expensive types of flooring like stone, wood, and concrete.
Commonly, and mistakenly referred to as "Lino" by many people vinyl flooring has remained a consistently popular choice with consumers up to the modern day. Ongoing advances in vinyl flooring technology like slip resistant surfaces and static conductivity have only served to increase the already huge range of applications that it can be used for.
Vinyl flooring essentially comes in three formats, cushioned vinyl, vinyl tile & strip flooring and contract vinyl flooring, which includes safety flooring. Of these, the contract vinyl can be roughly sub-divided into two types; Homogenous and Heterogenous.
